Starboard Brings PortMaster Games to Android Handhelds

Starboard is an app designed to bring many games from the PortMaster library to Android devices such as the Retroid Pocket series, AYN Odin, AYN Thor and other ARM-powered handhelds and phones.

Rather than converting every game to Android individually, Starboard creates a Linux environment inside Android. This allows many PortMaster games to run on Android with little or no modification. The goal is to give Android users access to a large collection of Linux game ports that were previously available only on Linux devices.

What Is PortMaster?

PortMaster is a popular platform used by the Linux handheld community. It provides community-created ports of classic PC games, open source projects and fan made conversions. Support for PortMaster has become one of the main reasons many users choose Linux based operating systems such as ROCKNIX and (d)ArkOS for their handhelds.

Starboard aims to bring the same experience to Android without requiring users to install custom firmware or switch to Linux. The app includes a handheld friendly interface, cover art support, game management tools and access to supported games.

Some of the games shown by the developers include Doom, Descent, Prince of Persia, Neverball and Half-Life. Starboard supports built-in handheld controls and also offers touch controls for phones and tablets.

Community Feedback Is Mixed

The idea has generated plenty of interest among handheld gaming enthusiasts, but early reports suggest the project is still in its early stages (hence the version number 0.22.0).

Some users have successfully launched games such as Half-Life, while others have reported performance problems, control issues and compatibility concerns. There have also been reports of games getting stuck on loading screens or failing to start.

The project has also attracted attention because of its technical approach and ambitious goal of bringing PortMaster games to Android. Community discussions have focused on compatibility, performance and how much of the PortMaster library will ultimately be supported.

Community members familiar with PortMaster development have noted that compatibility may vary between games, as some ports rely on Linux features that are not currently available through Starboard’s implementation.

Even with those concerns, many users view Starboard as an interesting experiment that could help bring Linux handheld features to Android devices in the future.

Getting Started

The developer recommends installing Starboard through Obtainium. The app can download new releases directly from GitHub and keep them updated automatically.

After installation, Starboard downloads its Linux runtime. Once that process is complete, users can begin installing supported games.

It is still too early to know how successful Starboard will become. Even so, the project offers an interesting look at what could be possible for Android gaming handhelds in the years ahead.
