Pocknix a SteamOS-Like experience for Android Handhelds

A new Linux-based operating system called Pocknix has arrived for the Retroid Pocket 5, Retroid Pocket 6, AYN Odin 2 family and Retroid Pocket Flip 2, promising a SteamOS-like experience on some of the most popular Android gaming handhelds. Developed by Shuuri Labs, the project combines Arch Linux with several gaming focused optimizations and boots directly into Steam’s Big Picture mode.

Inspired by projects such as SteamOS and CachyOS, Pocknix includes support for native ARM Steam, Proton 11 ARM (64) and FEX emulation for running x86 Windows games. The operating system can be launched directly from a microSD card, allowing you to keep your Android installation intact while experimenting with a desktop-like gaming environment. Oh, and you can exit steam where you will be greeted by stand-alone emulators which are already pre-configured (well, somewhat)

Early testing on the Retroid Pocket Flip 2

I have started testing Pocknix on my Retroid Pocket Flip 2 and, while the experience has been surprisingly smooth so far, I ran into a couple of minor issues that other Flip 2 owners should know about.

The first issue is related to the Flip 2’s controls. Unlike the Retroid Pocket 5, the Flip 2 lacks the extra back button that normally opens Steam’s Quick Settings menu. As a result, you’ll need to remap another button if you want access to those options. In my case, I temporarily reassigned the Select button during testing.

Another small quirk appears when switching from Steam to the KDE desktop. If the device enters sleep mode while in desktop mode, it may ask for a screen lock PIN after waking up. The PIN isn’t immediately obvious, but the issue can be avoided by disabling automatic screen locking in the KDE security settings.

Fortunately, neither of these issues is a dealbreaker, and they are more likely side effects of Pocknix still being in its early stages. The developer has already enabled SSH access, making it relatively easy for more advanced users to tweak system settings and work around some of these limitations.

I posted the instructions on the official announcement thread, if you need help fixing those annoyances (only works on the Flip 2 obviously).

I’ll continue testing Pocknix on the Flip 2 over the next few days, paying close attention to performance, battery life and game compatibility. Once I’ve spent more time with it, I’ll publish a full hands-on article with my impressions.
