Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Android recompilation

gu-native is an Android adaptation of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate built on MHGURecomp, with redesigned touch controls, controller support and adjustable graphics. Version 0.1.4, released on November 2, adds a low-end mode and save importing.

This is a static recompilation of the Nintendo Switch version, whose 32-bit ARM instructions are translated into C and compiled for Android. A runtime recreates Switch services and translates its NVN graphics API to Vulkan. It runs recompiled game code, while retaining a compatibility for the console’s systems.

Better controls

The work here goes beyond adding buttons over the screen. You can drag to move the camera, double tap to center it and tap an icon to track a monster. Items have a dedicated bar with swipe selection, and Hunter Arts have their own touch panels.

Buttons can be moved and resized, with three attack layouts available. Connecting a controller hides the touch controls automatically and clicking the right stick activates monster lock-on.

The new 0.1.4 release disables bloom and depth of field in low-end mode, uses lighter textures and keeps the HUD sharp all while reducing the 3D resolution. Its defaults are 40% resolution and a 30 fps cap, both adjustable.

The developer reports a steady 30 fps on a Moto g06 power during a five-minute session using that mode.

What you need

You need a 64-bit Android device running Android 10 or newer, ideally with Vulkan 1.2. Vulkan 1.1 support is experimental. Allow around 13 GB of free storage on the device and 10 GB on a Windows or Linux PC for setup.

You must supply your own Switch copy updated to 1.4.0, with its extracted exefs and romfs folders. The supplied Python tool generates libmhgugame.so and its identification file on your PC. Copy these alongside the game folders, install the APK and select that folder in the app. The APK includes no original game code or assets.

Save importing accepts the system file from an emulator or another device. It replaces the current characters, keeping a backup first. LAN play, mods and other inherited features are present but are not fully tested on Android.

Credit goes to khorne-hub for this adaptation and Rokk’s MHGURecomp for its foundation. The project also credits LAS Recomp, Forge and the libraries documented in its notices. The developer openly discloses using Claude Code during development.
