.hack//Versus gets an Android recompilation

The PS3 fighter .hack//Versus now has an unofficial Android and Windows adaptation from joseflores-dev. Story Mode, battles, saving and sound are listed as working, with touch controls and Bluetooth controller support on Android.

The project uses sp00nznet’s ps3recomp to translate the original game code into C++, then compile it for Android’s ARM64 processors. A runtime reproduces PS3 functionality, including graphics through Vulkan. This is a static recompilation with compatibility code, not a port built from the original source or a general purpose PS3 emulator.

Pick your fighter. Then your ISO.

You need Android 12 or newer, an ARM64 device and Vulkan 1.1 support. Recommended amount of RAM is 8 GB, plus roughly 2 GB of free storage for the game’s installation, on top of the space occupied by your ISO.

The supported disc is the Japanese PS3 release, BLJS93008. Testing was done with the English translation patch applied. The unpatched Japanese version is expected to work but remains untested. As a side note, if you have BLJS93008 without the patch, here is how to apply it.

Install the APK, open it and tap Elegir ISO, meaning “Choose ISO,” to select your own disc image. The first launch installs game data and compiles shaders, so give it a few minutes. No PS3 firmware or separate recompilation step is required.

What has been done so far

Android version 0.4.7, released on November 1, and the update imrpoves frame pacing and CPU overhead. The numbers aren’t bad at all, 29.8 FPS on a Galaxy S22 test, close to the game’s 30 FPS cap, with fewer large stutters and around 7% lower CPU use.

Bluetooth controllers should be paired before launching. Touch controls are also there, and the PAD button hides them. Experimental character mods include Azure Kite as an additional colour option.

Online play, trophies and custom music are unavailable for now. A replacement lobby for Android and PC multiplayer is on the roadmap, but it is not there yet. Back up your saves before uninstalling, as they live inside the app’s data folder.

Credit goes to CyberConnect2 and Bandai Namco for the original game, sp00nznet for ps3recomp, and the English translation team.
