Absolum launches on Android

Absolum is out on Android and iOS today, November 5, with Playdigious handling the mobile release of the fantasy roguelite brawler from Dotemu, Guard Crush Games and Supamonks. The advertised launch price is $8.99 instead of $11.99, with regional pricing varying by storefront.

The mobile edition includes the same game content as PC, including the free Threads of Fate update. It also has a redesigned interface, adjustable touch controls and controller support. There is quite a bit here beyond squeezing the action onto a smaller screen.

Royal complaints department

Absolum takes place in Talamh, where Sun King Azra has used public fear of magic to tighten his grip on the world. A group of rebels decides that the appropriate response involves swords, spells and punching his employees.

You initially choose between Galandra, who combines a large sword with necromantic powers, and Karl, a dwarf whose negotiating tools include fists and a blunderbuss. Brome and Cider join the playable roster as you progress, giving the game four distinct fighting styles.

Combat combines arcade brawling with spellcasting, counters and combo chains. Branching routes, changing encounters and different upgrades will give you reasons to reconsider your approach between runs. Supamonks handles the art and animation, while Gareth Coker’s soundtrack includes contributions from Yuka Kitamura and Mick Gordon. A respectable lineup to say at least.

Bring a friend

The mobile edition supports two players online, with Android and iOS players able to team up. Chromebook users and players using Google Play Games on PC are also in the mix.

However, Steam and console players cannot join mobile sessions. There is also no local multiplayer on one mobile device, so connecting two controllers to a tablet will not work.

Save compatibility has similar boundaries. Android progress can continue through Google Play Games on PC, but existing Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch saves cannot transfer to mobile. Android and iOS saves cannot transfer between each other either. The store’s mention of PC cross progression is just severely limited.

Buttons welcomed

Controller support includes button remapping and a choice of Xbox, PlayStation or Switch button symbols. Playdigious does caution that it cannot guarantee compatibility with every controller model. Touch players can select a fixed or floating joystick and adjust button position, size, opacity and touch area.

The graphics menu offers 30 or 60 FPS, resolution scaling and separate settings for shadows, reflections, ambience and environment detail. Playdigious warns that resolution scaling above 100% on phones can cause freezing without improving the displayed resolution.

Android requirements start at Android 9 and more than 3GB of RAM, but meeting those numbers alone does not guarantee compatibility. Playdigious excludes several GPU families, including Adreno 610 and below, Mali G52 and G57, and certain PowerVR models. Other devices have also been excluded after performance testing, so check the Google Play listing on the device you intend to use.

With its included content update, configurable controls and online co-op, Absolum has a substantial mobile feature set. How comfortably all that action runs on older Android handhelds is the part we still need to find out.
