Endless Sky lands on Miyoo Mini Plus

Endless Sky has an unofficial native port for the Miyoo Mini Plus, courtesy of developer zakijss. Version 1.0 was released on November 8, adapting the free open source space exploration game for OnionOS. Small handheld, big universe.

Inspired by Escape Velocity, Endless Sky starts you with a modest ship and lets you trade, carry passengers, take missions, mine and fight pirates. Spend your earnings on better equipment, bigger ships and eventually a fleet, while story unfolds around your travels.

The Miyoo port is based on Endless Sky 0.11.5 development code from November 7. According to its dev, it retains everything from that build.

Space on a small budget

This is a native adaptation, not an emulated console port. The software renderer handles graphics on the CPU, with the dev reporting 30 FPS in open space and full game speed during battles and hyperspace.

Menus and planet screens have been rearranged to fit nicely on 640 × 480. Holding Select or Start opens the additional commands, while a pointer handles menus and an on-screen keyboard covers text entry. Help screens name the Miyoo’s buttons, and an optional frame counter sits alongside the time, Wi-Fi and battery indicators.

Saves from the PC version are fully supported, so yes, you can transfer them easily. One thing though, remember to land before leaving. MENU opens Onion’s GameSwitcher, but progress since the last landing is lost, as in the PC game.

Installation is straightforward. Extract EndlessSky-Miyoo-1.0.zip, merge its Roms folder into the SD card root, and launch the game through Games → Ports → Space. Allow around 200 MB of card space. Saves are stored in Saves/CurrentProfile/saves/EndlessSky.

Only the Miyoo Mini Plus running OnionOS has been tested. Compatibility with the Mini v4 and other models remains unconfirmed.
