Experimental PS4 Emulator Project Bachata S4 Appears on Android

The Android emulation scene has always been full of surprises and a new project has recently caught the attention of the community. It’s called Bachata S4 and it aims to bring PlayStation 4 emulation to Android devices.

Before anyone gets too excited, this is still an extremely early experiment. Running PS4 games on Android is far beyond what current devices can realistically handle. At this stage, it is more of a technical demonstration showing that parts of the technology required for PS4 emulation can be adapted to Android.

Created by developer JICA98, Bachata S4 is based on the shadPS4 emulator and combines several technologies to make it possible to run x86-64 PlayStation 4 software on ARM64 Android hardware. The project uses FEX translation, a Linux userspace environment and Vulkan rendering to bridge the gap between desktop PS4 emulation and Android.

The project’s documentation mentions several titles that have reached an in-game state during testing, including Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Dark Souls Remastered and Sonic Mania. However, reaching the main menu or entering gameplay does not mean a game is playable. Performance issues, graphical glitches, crashes and compatibility problems are still expected at this stage.

For Android users, Bachata S4 should be seen as an interesting look into the future rather than something you can install and start playing with. PS4 emulation itself is still in its early days on PC, bringing the same technology to mobile hardware is challenging, including processor limitations, thermal throttling, graphics driver compatibility.

Still, projects like this show how quickly the emulation scene continues to evolve. A decade ago, running many sixth gen. consoles on a phone seemed unrealistic, now we can play PS2 titles even on budged phones.
