Yabadabadoo 0.4 speeds up Saturn on Miyoo Mini

Yabadabadoo 0.4 is out and promises substantial speed improvements to Sega Saturn emulation on the Miyoo Mini+, with Sega Rally and Daytona USA reaching full speed in the developer’s tests without frameskipping.

The RetroArch core is a fork of libretro’s Yabause port, packaged for OnionOS. The update works around reducing unnecessary work and compiler optimizations, with the developer saying the gains do not come from sacrificing accuracy.

How fast can it go

The published comparisons used a Miyoo Mini+ at 1600 MHz, repeating the same gameplay sections twice on each version. With frameskip disabled, Sega Rally rose from 60% of normal game speed to full speed, while Die Hard Arcade jumped from 35% to 91%. Virtua Fighter 2 improved from 39% to 70%.

Automatic frameskipping helps more demanding games keep up. Die Hard Arcade, for example, reached normal speed while showing around 37 pictures per second. Virtua Fighter 2 still fell short, reaching 88% of normal speed with Auto enabled.

How to update

Extract the release ZIP to the SD card root, place a supported Saturn BIOS in BIOS, and put your games in Roms/SATURN.

Existing settings, saves and older save states are preserved. Upgrading users need to change Frameskip Interval from 2 to 3 manually to match the new default. Auto can then skip up to three consecutive frames when needed, while skipping none when the game keeps up.

The launcher defaults to 1600 MHz, above the stock 1200 MHz. Which is technically an overclock, so if you notice any instability, reduce it.
