RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos for Android

RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos is a new battle arena strategy game coming from Section Studios, Inc. The game was officially in a pre-release state and the global launch is today. Since now everyone can download the game, we decided to take a look and see what RIVAL has to offer, how it handles and what are the initial impressions.

RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos Review

Although RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos is not a “heavy” game, after the initial download of around 60 megabytes from the Play Store, it downloaded additional 200 megabytes when it first started. And that’s fine, except there wasn’t any warning or even a note saying what it does in the background. Maybe the game noticed I was connected to a Wi-Fi so it didn’t want to bother me, but a short notice about the amount of data being downloaded would be nice. I am mentioning this at the beginning, so you can prevent spending your mobile data if you install it on your Android smartphone.

Gameplay

Moving on, RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos is a fast paced 1vs1 competitive battle arena that uses similar mechanics as “Clash Royale” with couple of changes. The game is set in a dark fantasy world, with creatures that look like they were pulled right off a book of ancient mythologies. The main goal of the game is to destroy your enemy towers and protect yours. Each player gets 2 minor and 1 main tower and a handful of creatures that can be summoned on the battlefield. To summon creatures you need mana and mana is self-regenerating during the battle. By the end of the match, an event will be triggered where  both players receive extra mana regeneration (Overdrive Mode). All battles are in real-time PvP (no async shenanigans here) and don’t worry, you can’t talk to other players, but you can send emojis 🙂

Decks and Currencies

Instead of chests, RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos uses “Tomes” (books) which can be translated, providing new creatures, spells or upgrades. Translating takes time, but players can choose to skip this by spending “Crimson”, the premium in-game currency that looks like a red crystal. Once you finish the tutorial mission, you can start your conquest by competing against other players from around the world. Climb the ladder, beat your opponents and win tomes in exchange.

Maintaining a healthy deck and upgrading your spells and creatures can be done by spending extra cards and gold. Each deck you create will have a leader, which can be any creature you like. Once selected as leader, that creature will have a special ability that you can during combat. Other creatures and spells in your deck also have unique abilities that can be unlocked by upgrading them, for example, “The Zealots” will get the “Evade” ability unlocked at level 2, “Rampage” at level 3 and so on.

Finally…

After you reach level 3 on your Player account, you can join a guild and continue climbing the leagues with your friends. Since the game is new, it really needs more players as match-making is not always perfect. But, the player base will definitely grow because RIVAL: Crimson x Chaos is free and fun. The developers are promising to extend the list of 30 Champions and Spells with each update, so that is something to look forward to. The only thing that bothered me are the tiny creatures which can be a problem if you play the game on smaller device, sub 5″ smartphone for example. However, I did try the game on 8″ tablet as well and it looks and plays just fine. Tap the link below to watch the trailer, or head on to the Play Store.
